WHAT HAPPENED: The four big U.S. carriers that fly overseas applied for slots to fly to Tokyo Haneda airport, which is desirable because it’s close to downtown. The carriers are Delta, American, United and Continental.
WHY IT MATTERS: United and Delta already have a major presence at Tokyo’s Narita airport. Getting slots at Haneda would bolster their presence in Japan. American and Continental see a chance to expand their relatively small share of Asia flying.
